“... Minute precision, solid
arrangements, an excellent control of dynamics, a multi-stylized
repertoire, and sparkling execution. ... (and) their unique singing
style creates shapes and timbres that move into experimental jazz. It is
truly a beautiful lesson of what is vital in jazz, inviting, crossing
genres, filled with radical thought that can be maintained without
losing its tenderness.”

The Tiptons Fall European Tour
October 9-31, 2005

"The Tiptons have built a solid reputation as a stellar live band, capable of alternating ferocious with delicate, driving with subtle.”Martin Johnson, PULSE!
"Looser than the 29th Street, more in
than out as ROVA, and hipper than World, this sax quartet is a groove."
Mark
Corroto, SOS Jazz
"...The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet trooped onstage lugging their arsenal of horns...They unleashed powerhouse unisons, hammering riffs, contrapuntally controlled chaos, fierce counterpoint and sharp solos on a program that ranged from Carla Bley to Los Lobos, from klezmer to Sun Ra." Paul De Barros, Down Beat
THE TIPTONS are an all-female sax quartet with percussion, based in New York and Seattle. The group features Jessica Lurie and Amy Denio, original members and lead composers of the internationally renowned Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet (BTMSQ), along with Tobi Stone, Tina Richerson and percussionist Elizabeth Pupo-Walker. Following their 2004 release of TSUNAMI, they were featured on "The Next Big Thing" (National Public Radio), busking in the subway of New York. Since then, they’ve performed at festivals throughout North America and and have toured Europe 4 times (70 concerts!) In October 2005, they self-released DRIVE, a fantastic, dynamic and lush new CD of original material. It includes one cover song from New Orleans, featuring special guest Artis the Spoonman.
BTMSQ was originally founded in 1988, named in honor of big band saxophonist and pianist Billy Tipton, following the post-mortem revelation that Tipton was actually a woman who lived as a man for more than 50 years. Many believe that this allowed Tipton to pursue a career in the male-dominated world of jazz. Not to be bound by convention, the Tiptons similarly do their own thing. With a repertoire that ranges from New Orleans “second - line” to jazz, Afro-Cuban to Balkan, klezmer and beyond, the Tiptons create some of the wildest sounds ever to come out of a sax quartet. Their dynamic, playful concerts feature high-energy interaction between members, and a repertoire that touches on soulful music from around the world.
THE TIPTONS have appeared at venues and music festivals worldwide including: The North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands); du Maurier Jazz Festival (Canada); MIMI Festival (France); Bumbershoot Music Festival (USA); The Coleman Hawkins Jazz Festival (USA); Horfest (Austria); Klinkende Munt Music Festival (Belgium); 1994 NYC Gay Games (USA); Michigan Women's Music Festival (USA); Women in Movement Festival (USA); Earshot Jazz Festival (USA); Crossroads Music Festival (Italy); Teatro in Campo (Italy), Jazzmiele Festival (Italy); Hallovino Festival (Switzerland); Festival Belleville (Italy); and Now Is The Time Festival (Italy). Since 1992, the Tiptons have taught workshops (internationally) on group composition and improvisation, saxophone and voice technique - and have given presentations on Women In Jazz, and Music & Dance from various cultures.
